“These are all paint strokes(painted on glass and peeled up) from the installation “Painted Shut” photographed and laid out as if they were parts in a model kit or paper doll book.
There’s bit of a poke here at something that I encounter in my work a lot. As my process evolves from one where I paint directly on a piece to much more of manufacturing paint strokes and their photo-reproductions in order to use them as collage materials, I am pressed up against the possibility of repeating a composition. One day I might do it this way, the next I might do it that way.
I enjoy the idea of sending someone home with a set of paint strokes to “build their own”. I am reminded of game shows I watched as a kid that encouraged you to buy the home version fo the game and “play along at home”. I never knew anyone who actually did, but the possibility of doing so made me feel like I could be a part of the fun if I chose.
Making this, an essential element was dragged kicking and screaming from my memory. The white border that surrounds the individual pieces of the set presents a particular challenge to ever making anything even close to complete. I remember that this white border was the dividing line between what is unreal and what is real. My wife told me she used to cut off the white border from stickers and paper dolls, but I suppose I was not that clever.” – Wil Murray
