3 November, 13:00-13:30 and 17:30-18:00.
VITRINE will present Tim Etchells in the Per4m section at Artissima, Turin. Per4m is a section of the fair devoted exclusively to performance art. Inaugurated in 2014, it is the first show of its kind on the international art-fair scene. The 2016 edition is curated by If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, Amsterdam.
Tim Etchells’ practice is concerned with tropes of performativity, liveness and presence. Binaries of exposure and concealment, construction and deconstruction, appearance and disappearance are explored through a framework of LCD monitors, computer screens, the stage, the space of a page, a gallery, a found site, a street, or some private space. Etchells’ interventions in these spaces and moments explore the dynamic relationship between the viewer and work in a context where systems in language and culture are interrogated for their productive or constraining effects. Many works produce a kind of non-linearity, an autonomous assembly and deconstruction of encounters and processes.
Etchells will present a new performance work ’Work Files’ for Per4m at ARTISSIMA. ’Work Files’ is an improvised solo performance by the artist focused on spoken language, drawing on its rhythmic, textural and musical properties as well as its semantics. The raw material for the work, as with Etchells neon and drawing practice, are the fragments of text, ideas, overheard conversation, cut-paste quotations from newspapers and web pages, ideas for performances, rough drafts, and other notes that he has accumulated over the years – a kind of linguistic archive.
For this dynamic and poetic performance Etchells selects, intercuts and remixes material from these texts creating a mesmerising and provocative torrent of language that often loops and repeats on individual lines, editing and re-writing on the fly, creating new dialogues and juxtapositions.
