Factory for an Opera
VITRINE will present a solo booth of Edwin Burdis as an installation. Burdis explores a unique and extravagant fusion between art, music and sub-cultural references, working across sound, sculpture, painting, drawing and performance. In his current practice he is focused on the production of an imagined opera, titled ‘Dry Stone Wall PA’ and set in Wales (where he has lived and worked since 2015). In his current and forthcoming exhibitions – including this Artissima booth – he creates works that are born from this factory for producing the opera, which include: an unusual cast of characters, dancers, singers, musicians, countryside landscapes, countryside architecture, musical instruments, a car mechanics and a car engine; depicting various themes reflecting on contemporary Britain. For Artissima, these elements become an assemble of sculptures, maquette, paintings, prints and wallpaper. All new works shown for the first time.
“Screw the Opera, we want to learn what is around the opera. It’s better, more interesting than the thing itself. A film, a moment. Sets, dancers, commercial bins, joy, the ever rolling hills, hay storage bags, pylons, magic, costumes, shitty canals, rally cars, chapels, sweat, blood, dome homes, sound systems, live and recorded song and dance. The audience would encounter a rehearsal for an opera which is never made.” – Edwin Burdis 2017
