John Walter transposes the structure of his imagination into the real world; his work is a channeling of social anthropology and psychoanalysis; investigating in either direction the macrocosm of the world outside and the microcosm of his internal world. His work, which includes painting, object, video, installation and performance, is a dissection of the self, revealing both narcissist and Everyman. It draws reference from both high and low culture filtering them and synthesising them into Walter’s very consistent ‘Maximilist’ aesthetic.
His paintings from ‘The Rococo Riots’ series, encompass digitally printed grounds, resin and layers of mark making and imagery that are built up into works that use grids, craquelure and collage to achieve spatial flatness. His work is full of colour, an excess of contrasting materials, visual luxury and recognisable contemporary media characters and imagery; they also contain a more serious underlying subject matter, the former being the seduction into the latter.
John Walter lives and works in London. He graduated with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2003. In 2006, he was awarded the Sainsbury Scholarship and was resident at The British School at Rome (2006-2008). His work has been exhibited internationally, with recent solo exhibitions including ‘The Rococo Riots’ at VITRINE Bermondsey Street, London (2013), ‘The Oil Baron’s Club’ at Smart Gallery, Aberdeen (2012) and ‘Double Exposure’ at VITRINE Bermondsey Square, London. His work has recently been exhibited in group shows at: Barbican Gallery, London; The Nunnery, London; and Ferrate Gallery, Israel. He organizes ‘Two Peacocks’ an ongoing large-scale collaboration that saw its first iteration at Gallery North in Newcastle in 2011. He is currently studying a PhD at University of Westminster entitled ‘Alien Sex Club: How architecture affects the mind and body in cruising and alternatives to antiretroviral therapy’.
